Walktober
How
to return your log
The premise of Walktober is pretty simple: Participants track their
physical activity during the month of October using
scorecards. The goal
of Walktober is to dramatically boost walking in just 31 days — from the
national average of 4,000 steps a day to 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.
Importance of walking
Promoting walking during October can also inspire individuals to make
walking a priority — in October and beyond, and foster a commitment by
organizations and institutions to place high value on walkable environments and
supportive policies.
Walking is one of the
most popular leisure time physical activities, according to the Surgeon General.
In a national survey, 44 percent of respondents said that they’d walked for
exercise the past two weeks. It’s followed by gardening and yard work.
A regular
walking program offers the benefits of physical activity such as:
-
Reduced
risk of developing high blood pressure
-
Decreased
risk of developing diabetes
-
Increased
muscle strength, flexibility and sense of balance, all of which reduce the
risk of falls
-
Help in
controlling weight
