Northern Kentucky Health Department

Walk and Roll Challenge and 2nd Sunday in Northern Kentucky

The Walk and Roll Challenge starts with the Extension’s 2nd Sunday celebration, planned for Sunday, October 11.

How to participate

1. Pick up a scorecard. Participants use a scorecard to track the frequency and duration of the physical activity they engage in during the challenge. Scorecards are available in newspaper inserts in the Community Recorders on October 1, in the Grant County Express on September 28,  or picking up a scorecard at the 2nd Sunday event. Scorecards are also available to download online (note Adobe Reader is required to open this file).

2. Use the scorecard to keep track of when you are physically active. Each day, write down how many minutes you are physically active, with the goal being at least 30 minutes per day, most days of the week. If a you fill in 20 or more squares during the four-week program, you'll be eligible to win prizes.

Any time you choose to walk or bike to a destination instead of driving, fill in the star for that day in the scorecard. More stars also mean a better chance to win prizes.

3. Return your scorecard to be eligible for prizes. At the end of the challenge, turn in your completed scorecard to your local county extension office or the Health Department by November 11 for a chance to win prizes.

2nd Sunday is a statewide campaign that will serve as a catalyst for improving Kentucky’s health status and can become a template for nationwide awareness.

Communities across Kentucky are planning to simultaneously close a roadway from 2-5 p.m. on the second Sunday of October (October 11, 2009) so that residents can walk, bike, run, play and participate in fun and healthy activities.

The goal in 2009 is for thousands of Kentuckians to collectively send a statewide and national message of the need for safe and accessible places to be active.
