Frostnip and Frostbite

Warning signs of frostnip

  • Redness or pain on the chin, cheeks, nose, ears, fingers or toes progresses to white or gray skin.
  • Skin feels superficially firm or waxy, but still soft underneath.

Treating frostnip

  • Do not rub the area! This will cause damage to skin cells!
  • Re-warm the area gently by blowing warm air on it or by placing the area against a warm body part, such as the armpit or stomach.

Warning signs of frostbite

  • Numbness of the chin, cheeks, nose, ears, fingers or toes.
  • Skin is white or gray.
  • Skin feels “wooden” all the way through.

Treating frostbite

  • Seek medical attention immediately.
  • Controlled re-warming is best performed under medical supervision.
  • Do not begin re-warming until the area is past the danger of refreezing.
  • Thawing is complete when color and sensation has returned. There can be significant pain, once the area is re-warmed.
