Award of Excellence in Public Health
Every Spring, the Northern Kentucky Health Department honors an organization, group and/or individual dedicated to the advancement of public health efforts.
Through the Award
of Excellence in Public Health, we seek to encourage and support those who give of themselves in an effort to further public health through collaboration with Health Department initiatives. Consideration is given to the furtherance of the Northern Kentucky Community Health Plan and the Healthy Kentuckians 2010 Objectives.
Recognition is given during the month of April to coincide with National Public Health Week.
2008 RECIPIENT
Mamie Harris
For her commitment to improving public
health by promoting HIV/AIDS education and testing, particularly within the
African-American community in Covington; and for her support of the Health
Department’s HIV/AIDS case management program.

2007 RECIPIENTS
Liz Bonis, WKRC-TV
For her commitment to improving public health by providing accurate, timely
and relevant health information to residents through local TV news stories; for
her interest in promoting a wide variety of health issues; and for her
professionalism in working with Health Department staff.
The Staff and Students of Piner Elementary School
For their commitment to improving public health by making their school
environment healthier, demonstrated by their collaboration with the Health
Department on programs to promote character development and prevent bullying;
and by their efforts to promote physical activity for students and staff.
2006 RECIPIENTS
Bill Scheyer
For his commitment to improving public health by working to
increase physical activity rates for adults, children and senior citizens in
Erlanger, demonstrated by his leadership of the Step Forward, Erlanger project;
work to secure funding for construction of new sidewalks; and collaboration with
local educators on the Safe Routes to School program.
Bethany Hanser
For her commitment to improving public health by encouraging breastfeeding
for new mothers, demonstrated by her dedication to helping new mothers and
mothers-to-be learn about breastfeeding and other maternity-related issues; and
collaboration with the Health Department’s WIC program to educate and provide
breast pumps to new mothers enrolled in WIC.
2005 RECIPIENTS
Kathy Rack
For demonstrating dedicated leadership, teamwork and
personal commitment in promoting public health efforts in cancer control
planning and initiatives as seen by more than 14 years of collaboration with the
Northern Kentucky Health Department in her quest to unite and promote
cooperation and communication among community partners in the efforts to reduce
the incidence and tribulations of cancer for Northern Kentuckians.
Dr. Thomas Goeke, D.M.D.
For demonstrating a strong commitment to optimal oral health in the
underserved children of Northern Kentucky as seen by his willingness to
volunteer his expertise and personal time to the Northern Kentucky Health
Department’s dental sealant program and by his dedicated efforts to advocate on
behalf of those in need of preventative dental care.
Dr. Jack Lenihan, D.M.D.
For demonstrating a strong commitment to optimal oral health
in the underserved children of Northern Kentucky as seen by his willingness to
volunteer his expertise and personal time to the Northern Kentucky Health
Department’s dental sealant program and by his dedicated efforts to advocate on
behalf of those in need of preventative dental care.

Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission, Inc. and Brian Angus, Executive Director
for their unwavering efforts to bring awareness of the issues of poverty and health disparities to the Northern Kentucky community as evidenced by their publication of the first
White Paper on Poverty in Northern Kentucky
in August 2003 and by their dedication in providing forums for discussion and in seeking partnerships to coordinate strategic planning to meet the needs of our diverse population
Christopher A. Cunha, M.D. for demonstrating visionary leadership in planning and provision of quality
child health services to those at high risk as seen by over a decade of
dedicated collaboration with the Northern Kentucky Health Department in
providing well-child preventive health services, promoting Kentucky child
immunization goals and establishing the first Boone County, Kentucky
school-based health center in two public schools
2003 RECIPIENTS
Preferred Surgical Care - Patricia Abello, M.D., James Giffin, M.D., Kenneth Glavan, M.D., Heidi Murley, M.D., Jeffrey Russell, M.D., Susan Yelich, M.D., and their office staff : For more than 10 years of loyal collaboration with the Northern Kentucky Health Department in providing diagnostic tests and needed treatment for breast cancer by accepting Medicaid reimbursement rates or incurring the costs themselves and improving the health and life expectancy of many women in Northern Kentucky.
Mary Carol Wagner for demonstrating dedication to the public's health by regularly going beyond her duties as the lab supervisor for the Northern Kentucky Water District to work closely with the Northern Kentucky Health Department's Environmental Services in providing expedient information on water line problems and water quality issues and by volunteering much time on inter-agency committees to address public health concerns related to the community's environment.
2002 RECIPIENTS
Northern Kentucky Infectious Disease Consultants, Inc., Alan Cohen, M.D., Dora Savani, M.D., Roger Teller, M.D. and office staff, for more than 15 years of compassionate, caring service and continual commitment to improved quality of life by offering medical care to individuals infected with HIV, and for their unwavering support of the Health Department’s services for these individuals and their families in the Northern Kentucky community.
Irma Parks, R.N., for demonstrating unwavering leadership, dedication and enthusiasm in promoting public health efforts in Grant County as well as the overall Northern Kentucky community, through her 11 years of service as the chair of the Grant County Board of Health, through active service on the District Board of Health, and by her continual community and school efforts to improve health, particularly breast cancer awareness and outreach services to the growing Hispanic population in Grant County.
2001 Recipients
The Northern Kentucky Family Health Center’s Pike Street Homeless Health Clinic, for their unwavering efforts to enhance the well-being of the homeless population of Northern Kentucky, and for their many years of collaboration with the Health Department in the service of this population, particularly with respect to tuberculosis prevention and control.
AIDS Volunteers of Northern Kentucky (AVNK) for their 10 years of community service, which includes, HIV/AIDS education, client and legislation advocacy, support groups, specials events and holiday projects, and for their continued support of the Health Department’s client services by providing financial and program assistance that enhances the quality of life.
2000 Recipients
Robert A. Grober, M.D., for his vision, dedication and leadership in planning, implementing and maintaining a quality diabetes education program for the Northern Kentucky community as chair of the Diabetes Advisory Committee from January 1988 to March 2000.
Northern Kentucky Family Health; The St. Luke Hospital; St. Elizabeth Medical Center for dedicated collaboration with the Northern Kentucky Health Department in providing WIC and Nutrition Outreach services; thereby promoting positive maternal and child health outcomes in our community.
