Lead-Safe Work Practices Class

Register online

The Health Department offers a training class to help spread the word about not spreading lead. Learn safe ways to work with suspected lead paint to help prevent lead poisoning to children and adults.

The class will meet during two sessions—participants must attend both to complete the course—from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2, at the Brighton Center, 741 Central Ave., Newport, Ky.

Attendees will learn about the health effects of lead, personal protective equipment, setting up work areas to reduce dust, performing renovation work safely and safe disposal of possible lead contaminated debris.

Who can benefit from learning lead safe work practices?

  • Homeowners doing renovation, repainting, or remodeling work where lead-based paint may be encountered

  • Building supervisors and landlords

  • Homeowners and property owners associations

  • Community and social service organizations

  • Home (or code) inspectors

  • Maintenance workers

  • State and local municipal agencies

This training class is presented at no cost to attendees. The goal of this program is to teach attendees lead-safe work practices and the strategies for implementing them. Many homes built before 1978 contain lead-based paint, so it is important that renovation, remodeling and repair activities use methods that reduce and control dust and debris created during work. Even a small amount of dust can pose a serious health risk to children and families.

This course is not valid for HUD requirements for performing renovation, remodeling and repair in federally assisted and owned properties, nor is it valid for performing renovation when lead abatement work orders have been issued, or when a unit or child day-care facility has been identified as the possible source of a child’s lead poisoning. Classes for HUD interim control education will be offered based on demand. If you need this type of class, please contact the Health Department so one can be scheduled.
